When I originally heard that there was going to be a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender (AtLA), I was ecstatic. But then I watched the first episode of Legend of Korra (LoK). It was so poorly done that I couldn’t enjoy it, but because it was Avatar, I still finished the first season. Then came the second season Book: Spirits. I didn’t even get half way done. And here’s why.
First, what bugs me the least is the setting and the music, but it still really annoys me. The writers suddenly made the world have an American feel, when it should have stayed Asian. And it is highly debatable whether the cities should have been that advanced. It messed up the wonderfully unique atmosphere that was the underlying essence of Avatar.
And then there is the disaster that is the characters. All are immature, unrealistic, and annoying, especially the main character. After a whole season and a half, she still made me grit my teeth with her lack of character development. This mostly happened when the forced love triangles came up. And the villains were as unrelatable as the protagonist, giving me no reason to want to continue the series. Overall, the characters weren’t lovable, unlike the ones in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The fake love triangles also were a distraction the plot line. They were there merely for drama and they weren’t even well developed; nothing similar to the charming and harmless romance in the original series. The plot line then became this nonsensical ‘spiritual mumbo-jumbo’ (to quote the original Avatar). Don’t get me wrong. I would have loved seeing a good story about the Spirit World and the politics after the Fire Nation War, but the way they did it was terribly executed.
Eventually, I couldn’t stand watching the death of Avatar: The Last Airbender, so I stopped viewing Legend of Korra. Now, I deny LoK as being canon. I have been working on my own sequel of AtLA called Avatar: Successor. You can find my writings of it and other stories on this site. I hope you enjoy them.
